CFM 56 - 3 Engine Oil System
The engine oil system is a self-contained, center-vented recirculating type system. Each engine has an independent system comprising oil storage, distribution and indicating to provide lubrication and cooling for the engine bearings and gears.
Oil is pumped from the tank by a supply pump in the lube unit on the AGB. During normal operation, the oil flows through an oil supply filter prior to distribution. If the filter becomes clogged, a clogging indicator pops out and a bypass valve opens.
Oil is drawn from the sumps by 3 scavenge pumps contained in the lube unit. The oil passes across magnetic chip detectors and through a common scavenge filter. Before returning to the tank, the oil is cooled in the main oil/fuel heat exchanger.
The oil tank is a light alloy weldment envelope with a sealed cast light alloy cover. It has an external flame-resistant coating and 5 inner bulkheads to reduce sloshing. It has a magnetic drain plug at the bottom and a sight glass for visual level checks.
The oil tank is located on the lower right side of the fan case.
Total volume (usable oil plus residual oil plus air ) of the oil tank is 5.3 U.S gallon (20 liters).
It has an oil capacity (usable oil plus residual oil) of 4.8 U.S gallons (18 liters).
